High Tea Hyatt Style

This post is a little over-due but with spring in full-swing what better time is there to blog about High Tea. I love a good high tea. There is something vintage, ceremonial and lady-like about it and I cant get enough.

Whether you do it as a girlie catch-up, birthday celebration, bridal shower it's just so gorgeous. I love the little sandwiches, petit fours, the scones, the cakes - I'm sure you the picture. It's just so pretty, damn it!

Moving right along, a couple of months ago I caught up with a friend of mine who wanted to try out the Hyatt's High Tea and I so kindly obliged to join her. Truth is we hadn't seen each other for ages and she wanted to treat me for my birthday, which was so lovely of her.

So what did we eat? I'm a savoury girl myself so had the sausage rolls, mini quiches and savoury tarts but you can't do high tea without getting into the sweet stuff so I tried that too, my verdict - pretty good value and a nice afternoon out. Next high tea venue The Duchess Bar and this time it's my treat!

All the info:
Patrons enjoy a relaxing afternoon of high tea with finger food between 3 and 5pm daily in the Conservatory Lounge. Sweet and savoury items including in sandwiches, cakes, pastries and puddings. There's also a lovely pianist who plays while you indulge - so lovely.Guests also get bottomless sparkling wine, tea and coffee all for $48

Jus Right

SERVING UP THE PERFECT BURGER IS HARDER THAN IT LOOKS, BUT ONE PERTH BURGER BAR IS CONSISTENTLY HITTING THE MARK. BY BELINDA CIPRIANO

What makes a good burger - ah-mazing? I get this question asked of me a lot. To some it’s the delicious, tender patty, while for others it’s the sweet taste of the relish or a combination of both.
Like most people, I love a good burger and when asked who makes the best in the city I have got to give it to Jus Burgers, time and time again.
Jus Burgers, the brainchild of foodie Justin Bell, opened its first store in Leederville in January 2009 and has since expanded to Subiaco, Fremantle and more recently Northbrige.
And while the Guvnor, Spanish Snag, Mullet and Pommy all sound like a prelude to a cheesy joke, they are in fact all names of the delicious burgers available at this burger bar/institution.
On my recent visit to Jus, I ordered the Pommy Burger with a side of onion rings while my friend ordered the Spanish Snag with a serve of chips.
My Pommy burger was just as I remembered it – how could I forget (I don’t even look at menu anymore, even though I should) it’s the only burger I order off the menu and it never, ever fails to disappoint.
Western Australian Amelia Park Beef, which is Meat Standards Australia approved, hormone free, char-grilled, cheddar and back bacon served on a Turkish bun with homemade aioli, relish, lettuce, tomato and Spanish onion – this burger is to die for – especially for those who are a bit more carnivorous.
The Spanish Snag devoured by my friend was equally delicious and similar to the Pommy burger but served with chorizo sausage and sweet red peppers instead.
Our sides were just the right size and having never tasted the Jus’ onion rings, I have to say I was impressed.
Made fresh daily, as with everything served up by Jus, these delightful rings were the perfect accompaniment to my delicious burger and left me more than satisfied.
I love what Justin Bell has brought to Western Australia and the way he supports WA growers and suppliers but most of all I like that his burgers are always jus right!

NEW LOOK, NEW MENU @ Rydges CBD Restaurant Perth

I haven't written a personal restaurant review on this blog for a while. There's a few reasons why - I do it a lot for work and just like everybody else like to enjoy dining out sometimes without having to take notes, pics etc, secondly you can read a lot of my reviews in ishoperth and lastly I haven't come across a great lunchtime feed in a while - that is until I dined at the Rydges CBD Restaurant last week. This, well this I had to share.

I had actually heard the hotel's CBD Restaurant had gone through a few changes including with their menu and their new head chef Sam Southall (who I interviewed earlier this year see ishoperth interview below) so when thinking of places to dine for a girlie catch up I thought I'd give it a go.

The lunch menu (see below) is reasonably priced with the most expensive item on the menu Wagyu @ $62. On this day the two of us tried the Cauliflower Soup with truffled hazelnut honey (AMAZING!) for our entree and the linguini with meatballs, parmesan, tomato, tomato and basil was my choice for a main.
I'm not one to go for soup when I dine out, because I'm usually left underwhelmed, but this delicious and light dish served in a little le creuset pot was just beautiful. Creamy but not rich and just delightful I could have easily had a second serve - yum!

The linguini was cooked perfectly al dente (to the tooth) and the combination of tomato, olive, basil and parmesan is always going to be a winner for me. Add to that melt -in-your-mouth meatballs and I'm a happy girl.

It was a pleasant afternoon and sitting amongst the city suits lunching it was nice to relax and not worry about going back to work or even having to write anything down - just perfect. So next time you're in the city drop in and say hello, have a bite, or enjoy a drink and say I sent you ;) Bom Approveito!

Linguini with meatballs, tomato, olives and basil - YUM!

Choux Cafe? Oui S'il vous plait

There is nothing quite like a French Patisserie and when it comes to finding the best in Perth you can't look further than Emmanuel Mollois' Choux Cafe.

Located in Swanbourne it's been around since 2003 and sells French favourites including croissants, boeuf bourguignon pie, quiche, French Baguettes (not the blingy kind the delicious, crunchy kind - get my drift), Croquembouche and Parisian Macarons - delish!

We stopped by last Saturday and like any hotspot in Perth, there was a queue out the door with people desperate to get their hands on Emmanuel's French treats.

Once the chaos died down I was able to order a flat white, friand and a couple of Macarons (vanilla & hazelnut), while husby ordered a roast lamb baguette and a juice. All of it was yummy and reminded me of my time spent in Paris last year, minus the masses of people leaning over you while you eat and the paired table settings facing the window.

Emmanuel has gained a reputation as one of the best pastry chefs in Perth and in my opinion it is thoroughly deserved. I will definitely visit this quaint little gem again soon - just maybe I'll go midweek so I can enjoy it without the hordes.

Foodie score: 4.5/5
Sweet treats, I was like a kid in a candy store

Hazelnut and Vanilla Macarons - yum!

Review: Devilles Pad

A few weeks ago my girlfriend invited us out for her birthday dinner at Devilles Pad. It's a place none of us had been to before and wanting to try something different I couldn't wait to check it out.

This themed, kooky, cabaret lounge-cum-cocktail bar-cum-restaurant is, well, different. And when I say different I mean good different. Making a statement from the the moment you walk in the door Devilles is set out somewhat like the Royal Show's Ghost Train with patrons welcomed by costumed staff and zombie-like lifesize wall mannequins.

Inside the quirky food  follows the theme with Quesadilla Diabla, Evil Empanadas and Hot Hickery Hogs on the diner-like menu. I chose the Royale with Cheese along with some Chicken Bites and Mexicorn washed down with the Tequila Temptress - all very basic but still quite nice.

You see the thing with Devilles is it's not just about the food and drink, it's about the whole atmosphere and this got it a 5/5 on my scale. Open Thursday through to Saturday Devilles entertainment ranges from Karaoke, Burlesque to Rockabilly with GoGo Dancers and Salsa Bands taking to the stage at any one time. It's great fun and a little different - try it, you may just like it!

The Devilish Choc Fudge Brownie with ice-cream & Choc-Bourbon Sauce

The Birthday Girl's Moet Punch - now we're talking!

Have you been to Devilles Pad? Did you like it? I'd love to hear from you. Bx

Summer Flavours

A WISE man once told me I could “indulge in the taste of Italy without leaving Perth” - truer words could not have been spoken. This wise man I speak of? Maurizio Di Ciano of Maurizio Restaurant & Events Catering.
Summer flavours Octopus Salami a light refreshing dish with a slice of lemon and wine citrus, dry, sharp at the end but still very long in flavour. Served similiarly to carpaccio it’s a great starter. Salt and pepper citronelle needs lemon served with Mavasia Bianca – Alfonsia – just beautiful.
We tried the papardelle with broad beans, tomatoes and potatoes nestled in a bed of parmesan crisp. This dish was colourful, unique and light and great for those ladies who like to lunch.
There was definitely a theme coming through the dishes – Summer. Light fresh flavours had my palate dancing for joy. Side serve of potatoes, capsicum, eggplant, zucchini, beans and carrots.
Swordfish served with Etna Doc was you guessed it light and delicious and the beautiful flavours. Straight from the ocean but no fishy flavour in sight, you see the trick to good seafood is when it’s fresh there is no smell (again words of the wise man). Caught here in the waters of WA Maurizio loves to use local products keeping both the consumer and supplier very happy.
Char-grilled baby lamb marinated in rosemary and extra virgin olive oil. Again what says spring more than lamb. Light and served with finocchio on a bed of greens. The feenel balances the flavours of the lamb and matched with the wine it was a great match, Cooked medium the lamb was tender and juicy and the wine brought out the flavour of the rosemary and the pepper highlighted the flavour.
What I like about Maurizio is his food is simple and delicious – what Italian food is all about really. His Italian fare transports you instantly to gorgeous villa somewhere in Italy. Italians are a proud bunch and love nothing more than to look after their guests and Maurizio and his staff do this in spades. Going over and beyond the call of duty to satisfy our tastebuds.
The Fresh Fruit Tart was a gorgeous tart made with apple, strawberry, kiwi fruit and rockmelon served on a shortbread crust and was something I certainly imagine enjoying on a summer’s day. This flan was light and fruity and nice way to move onto our more decadent dessert the Orange Chocolate Mouse. Maurizio teamed the tart with an Asti which was just delightful.
The Orange Chocolate Mouse served in an a ginger waffle basket had my colleague in seventh heaven and not coming down anytime soon. This dessert certainly packed a punch and was decadent but not heavy – just gorgeous. Maurizio introduced us to the dessert wine the ombretto which had traces of cinnamon, almond, licquorice and cloves. Indulgent and We felt extremely honoured to be trying it as he told us the background of the wine. It was served at Barack Obama’s Presidential Dinner and all I could think of was Yes we can!
Our last surprise treat was a cheese and fruit platter with various types of cheeses including one of my favourite things truffle infused pecorino. This was a beautiful way to finish off my Italian dining experience here in Perth. I have to say I’ve been to Maurizio’s several times and each time it gets better and better. Talk show queen and president Obama’s friend Oprah often asks what one knows for certain and I can honestly say this is what I know for certain – Maurizio Restaurant and Events Catering never disappoints.

Modern Mediterranean on the Upper-Seaside

Slick with an old-school twist is how I’d best describe the newly revamped Gigi’s on George in what I like to call - the upper-seaside, East Freo.Tucked away at the end of funky George Street, Gigi’s has been around for a little while but has recently undergone a makeover and on the day we visited it seems I wasn’t the only one to notice with suits from all over the Fremantle area, too discovering my latest find.Greeted by duty manager Amanda Sullivan we were given their latest menu which was not only extensive but featured an array of local fresh produce including the Blue Swimmer Crab Cakes. As well as some fantastic menu options (including tapas) Gigi’s has a great drink’s menu on offer too, so to start us off bar manager Johannes DeWet organised a Mojito to whet our appetites. While we waited for our entrees I took a closer look at the changes at Gigi’s, which included the bar area great for tapas and drinks after work.Inside the polished look of crisp, white table cloths and black leather chairs combined with the contrast of the heritage listed building’s high ceilings and old style fire places added to the charm that is Gigi’s.But now onto the food because that’s what it’s all about – right?Sipping our Mojitos (which by the way was refreshing and the perfect way to start our dining experience) Amanda presented us with Artichoke Hearts, Blue Swimmer Crab Cakes and Japanese Seared Scallops. The scallops coincidentally reminded me of spring – light, so colourful and fresh. Topped with parmesan crisps and pepperonata they were nestled in a light tomato veloute’ and looked so good I didn’t want to touch them – but I did and boy they were good.On the other hand the Artichoke Hearts were very earthy, though not tough like some I’ve had before. Served with truffle infused breadcrumbs, herbs and Parmesan, it was another great starter. My colleague tried the Crab Cakes which were nestled on a bed of greens. He commented they were battered nicely without being greasy or too thick – delicious!Next up were our mains, the Pan Fried Gnocchi, Fish of the Day and Char Grilled Fillet steak teamed up with the Babo 2008 Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie (a versatile wine suited to all dishes).I tried the Gnocchi first. You see being married to an Italian you always compare freshly made pasta to the one your nonna or in my case mother-in-law makes. My verdict – to die for! And that’s saying something.Freshly made that morning head chef Ricky Lim did an outstanding job with my favourite edible fluffy pillows.Melt in your mouth pieces of gnocchi combined with the spring (I know there’s that word again) flavours of zucchini, eggplant, pumpkin, red pepper fondue, olive oil topped with shaved Parmesan danced around in my mouth causing a commotion I’m not quite used to – spectacular. The Fish of the Day – Seared Yellowfin Tuna was cooked to perfection and was not fishy at all. Served with a side salad of basil, tomato, potato and boccocini, it was absolutely delightful and great match for the Babo 2008 Pinot Grigio (not only versatile but crisp and one I could of kept drinking all afternoon). The Char Grilled Fillet Steak served on a bed of potato cake and field mushroom with a side of tomato and asparagus was cooked medium rare. Tender and juicy along with the gorgeous flavours of the potato cake this dish was a winner with my colleague. Magic, was all he could say!If you think we stopped here, you’re wrong (although we probably should have).Dessert can only be described as heaven on earth.Sharing the Chocolate Crepes and Lemon and Raspberry Mousse we took our time devouring these sweet treats. The Chocolate Crepes with strawberry jam were light and fluffy and the contrast of the sour cherries made it not sickly sweet and had me wanting to finish the whole thing. The Lemon and Raspberry Mousse, Citrus Curd, Italian Meringue, well that too was delicious and being a lighter dish should have been my first option - a great way to finish off such a wonderful dining experience.
Head chef Ricky Lim said he wanted to cook modern Mediterranean food and I definitely think he has achieved this here at Gigi’s. And speaking of - who is Gigi? Does she even exist? I don’t know but one thing I do know for sure is she’s funky, flavoursome, friendly and I’m going to get to know her a whole lot better!

Sure To Delight

By Belinda Cipriano
TRY getting into Sandrino's on a weekend without a booking and you will struggle - trust me I've tried. It's booked out weeks in advance.
However what a lot of people don't know is this popular Fremantle eatery is the perfect place to grab a quick bite to eat most days of the week.
Yes, it's gained a reputation for having lines out the door (and with good reason) but if you want a Sandrino's fix pop in during the week - you won't be disappointed, just as my colleagues and I came to find out.
First on the menu was the Antipasto platter. A colourful dish filled with all the Mediterranean treats, sure to delight the greatest of food connoisseurs, it came filled with grissini sticks, marinated vegetables, prosciutto, salmon, dips and cheese.
A meal in itself, it was an ideal meal for sharing and certainly satisfied the three of us.
Next was the bruschetta and garlic prawns. The bruschetta, with fresh, chunky tomatoes and drizzled in olive oil, was delightful and hearty.
The garlic prawns served on a bed of rice was creamy but not too sickly and was served with a Gieson Sauvagan Blanc which was crisp and refreshing, complimenting the garlic prawns perfectly.
After whetting our appetites with these delicious starters, original chef Edwin Kubale surprised us with gluten-free Pannoni pasta.
You see, what a lot of people don't know is that as well as serving freshly made pasta, Sandrino's also offers their Celiac customers a choice of gluten-free pastas and sauces. Owner Jelena Kaddour said there had been a demand for gluten-free dishes in recent years.
Our Pannoni pasta was served with chicken, mushroom, sundried tomato and spinach in a creamy sauce, and was surprisingly very light leaving room for more of the delights awaiting us.
Also on the menu was popular lunchtime treat the Beef Burger with beer battered fries, vegetable stack and seafood platter for one.
Although all dishes were delicious the one that got my nod was the seafood platter.
Now the menu tells me it is a platter for one but trust me when I say this dish more than satisfied my colleagues and me. It came with squid, prawns, salmon and red emperor, and was served with a light avocado salad. Everything was grilled to perfection and this was easily the stand out meal of the day.
My vegetarian colleague on the other hand thought the vegetable stack was the best. It was beautifully presented with zucchini, asparagus and capsicum in a tomato sauce, and she said this dish was just her.
To finish us off the homemade burger with a beef pattie, cheese, lettuce, onion and tomato sauce hit the spot.
People ask me why I keep going back to Sandrino's and I guess it's the comfort of knowing that whenever I go there I'm guaranteed a delicious feed at a great price.
To know the original chef Edwin Kubale of nine years is still going strong and owners Jelena and Sam Kaddour are two of the best in the business also gets my vote.
Add to the fact that it's tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the cappuccino strip, this Freo favourite will always remain at the top of my list time and time again.

So I lied!!!

Hey guys I know I promised to blog weekly but things have been a little crazy over the last month. Want to know what I 've been up to? Where do I begin?

Regular readers of my blog will know I'm planning for my trip of a lifetime & I'm happy to say it is almost here. Everything has been booked & paid for and now all we have to do is wait.

I'm blogging today to let you know that there will DEFINITELY be more blogging as we approach take-off and during my travels.

So what have I been up to? Well April was certainly a busy month with a bunch of us organising a Quiz Night for the victims of the Madeira Islands mudslides. It was a successful event with close to 400 people attending and raising lots of money for our beloved little Island. It was hardwork but fun & definitely worth it and got me thinking I'd like to do more fundraising events in the future - more of that to come when I get back.

We've also been innundated with wedding invites this year and have so far attended five all up (and it's not even June!), we've got one more before we leave and then my bff's when I get - can't wait for that one!

Works also been crazy & I'm happy to say I've been doing a wide range roles from researching to writing about No-dig gardens & discovering Perth's Best places to wine & dine. It's been a lot of fun & has only enforced how much I love my role of FOOD JOURNALIST.

Anyway as promised I'll continue to blog about food, wine, fashion, travel & everything lifestyle so if you want to hear more please, please, please continue following my adventures.

In the meantime here are a few pics which tells the story of my last two months - Adeus x
Welcoming everyone to the Quiz Night

Little Caesars open in Leederville - woop woop!!!

A few weeks ago Theo Kalogeracos - brainchild of Little Caesars Mundaring opened up his second Pizzeria replacing Retro Betty's in Leederville (another big TICK for Leederville - it's slowly but surely becoming the foodie haven Perth's been missing). And after three weeks of indulging I thought why stop now and went back for a my Little Caesar's fix!!

You can spot Little Caesars a mile away - the queue of people lining up all the way down the street or the alfresco diners sitting on upside-down black buckets usually gives it away!!But what makes Little Caesars so unique are the types of pizzas Theo & his team come up with day in, day out. On any given day you can find a pizza with pumpkin, lamb & yoghurt, prawns & prosciutto, chocolate and toffee, with each one absolutely delicious in their own right.

On this occasion I could not wait to sink my teeth into the Jane's Addiction (prawn & proscuitto) which was the very first pizza Theo introduced me to back in June at the Good Food & Wine Show.

This delicious combination of garlic cream sauce, prosciutto, prawns, wild rocket pesto and mozzarella work together beautifully - making my taste-buds jump for joy with every bite!

Have you been to the new Little Caesars? What do you think of it? Do you love it as much I do? I'd love to hear from you - Cooking In Choos :)

Christmas with the Girls

It's become a tradition that just before Christmas my girlfriends and I get together for dinner and drinks. This year there was only a few of us but none-the-less we went out anyway, kicking off the night at The Cabin in Mt Hawthorn.

The Cabin's a cool Melbourne-style haunt that's got everybody talking and living only blocks, I'm probably one of the last people to try it out!

Starting with champagne cocktails, we inspected the extensive drinks menu which included wine, spirits, cocktails and beer. The Cabin also has a funky tapas menu or if you want something more substantial they offer that too. It's definitely something Perth was missing and had it not been 37 degrees outside we would have stayed longer.

Mt Hawthorn has a real vibe about it at the moment and another one of the places taking off is The Azure Restaurant. I've been there several times before and am yet to be disappointed with the food, service and ambience - it's just beautiful.

On this occasion I ordered their chargrilled chicken and tomato roulade and for dessert the trio of creme brulee. The chicken was moist, tender and not at all dry and teamed with the tomato and potato gratin was an absolute winner.

The creme brulee trio of mocha, lime & pistachio & vanilla was delightful and very light making it even easier to devour.

All in all my girlfriends enjoyed our dining experience at Azure - in fact we were the last to leave (they had to practically kick us out!). Do yourself a favour and visit them soon!!

A visit to Gigi's on George

Last weekend I paid a visit to Gigi's on George on funky George Street in East Fremantle for an upcoming review in Menu Magazine. This place has been around for a while but has undergone some changes in recent months.

Now I won't reveal too much about my afternoon but I will say Gigi's is definitely one to look out for, if you're ever in the area or even looking for somewhere different to dine. The food was fabulous, the staff were brilliant and the cocktails to die for!!!

With summer just around the corner their new and brilliant Tapas menu provides even more delectable treats to choose from their already extensive and gorgeous menu. But that's enough from me, you can read more about the day in our December issue of Menu Magazine - in the meantime though here's a sneak peak of me enjoying their delicious entree of scallops!!!

CRAZY - BUSY!!!

So again it's been a while since I blogged but I have had a full on few weeks so again you will all hear about it one after the other in the one post - make sense - no, then just keep reading!!!

Where to begin a few weeks ago I was invited by Simon from Dimattina Coffee's in Osborne Park to take part in a barista course. Now I've owned a coffee machine since March but don't even look at it, let alone use it. Don't get me wrong I love coffee but when it comes to using a professional machine - forget it. When the offer came up to take part in a Barista Basic's of course I jumped at the chance.

So what did I learn, well Kaya our very knowledgeable instructor covered everything from how to extract the perfect shot of espresso to how to make cafe coffees with confidence including a cappuccino, flat white, ristretto and long black.

We also learnt how to correctly steam milk and how to avoid making coffee
too weak, too bitter, too hot or too cold. We also dabbled in some awesome coffee art making hearts and leaves (with her help of course), though I do think I'll stick to using my skewers to make my coffee look flash as this sort of thing takes practise!!!

Dimattina offer all sorts of courses from your basic, to industry based and learning how to get the most of your machine at home. To find out more visit http://www.dimattinacoffee.com.au/dc/index.htm

Take a look at what I got up to below:

On the Sunday of the long weekend Ari & I decided it was time we had a date night. It's been so long since we went out on our own so a night on the town was just what the doctor ordered (only these day our nights out as you all know revolve around FOOD). Ari rang around looking for places to go and would you believe it people there are hardly any good places open on Sunday.

We tried Jojo's, Osteria, Pata Negra, Andaluz and Galileo and they were all CLOSED. In the end we decided we try Azure in Mt Hawthorn and were pleasantly surprised with what we found.

I'd heard mixed views about this place and was very happy to discover the good stuff seemed to be all true on the night we dropped by. The waitstaff were very attentive and the food was first-class. This gorgeous resort-style, mediterranean cum Asian fushion restaurant is definitely one to try.

We ate the Italian salsiccia with garlic & Rosemary ciabatta to start and for my main I had the braised beef cheeks on a polenta mash, while Ari opted for the Pork Belly (so good). My beef cheeks were perfectly braised in a rich tomato sauce and just melted in my mouth with every bite. The polenta was soft and fluffy and mixed with the sauce was just delicious.

We were tempted to try the desserts ( which are baked daily & look oh so good) but after finishing of my beef cheeks and having to unbutton my jeans my stomach knew we both had more than enough.

I would go back to Azure in an instant and I have told many of my friends to try it out too, so why not give it a go. I promise you'll love it!!!

Me about to dive into the yummy Beef Cheeks

Last weekend Ari celebrated another milestone - his 34th birthday and as usual we celebrated with our favourite thing - FOOD & plenty of it!!!

After hosting several dinner parties at our house (and lack of space) Ari thought it was best we take him back to his roots and spent the evening at his mum's house. Of course she fed us with antipasto, entrees, mains & desserts & we were left absoutely stuffed!!!

It was a lovely night spent with both families celebrating another special day!!

Here's Ari blowing out the candles on his gorgeous Ruby's Patisserie cake - Yum!!

Now to the really exciting news (not that the rest isn't but this is really exciting - for me any way!).

I fulfilled a long-time goal of mine yesterday by apearing on one of my favourite cooking shows Foxtel's Charlie's Kitchen. I interviewed Charlie a while back for Menu Magazine and I asked if I could have a go at cooking on the show, he said yes and the rest is history.

It's been a long time coming as the interview was back in April (I think) but with work and other commitments it's taken forever - anyway I digress.

I won't giveaway too much as I want you all to tune in but what I will say is that it was an experience and one I would love a chance to do again (hopefully they'll have me back). I got to cook three meals, an entree, main and dessert & I also got to combine the cultures of both my parents and my husband's family which was an absolute treat.

Here is a sneak peak of what I go up to with the good man himself & I'll let you know when it airs on Foxtel soon.

Wagamama Baby

Wednesday July 29 2009
Last Wednesday night the team from Menu Magazine was invited to attend the Fremantle Wagamama launch. Industry locals and media attended the soiree which was to promote their new Catering Menu.

Of course we jumped at the chance to try the goodies on offer and first up was the Kare Loman Rice Balls, yummy curry infused riceballs with a pink grapefruit dipping sauce. I love a good rice ball but had never tried a curry sort before but am happy to say it was so good that I went back for seconds and third!

Also on the menu was Ebi Katsu - King Prawns in panko breadcrumbs with chilli and garlic dipping sauce. Again a highlight of the night and downed with my lemon ice-tea was just delightful.

The main course of the night was a choice of two noodle boxes or two rice boxes. I went Teriyaki Steak Soba - tepan fried Soba noodles with baby bok choy, red onions, snow peas, bean sprouts and chillis garnished with grilled beef tenderloins - definitely the overall winner of the night!

With winter in full force it's a shame many people don't venture down to Fremantle Harbour to experience the new Wagamama on the beach but with spring around the corner I'd get in quick as I'm sure it will be pumping as the warmer weather arrives!
My favourite dish of the night the Teriyaki Steak Soba

Another Girlie Lunch

Friday July 17 2009
Girlie lunches are so much fun, even more so when you have gorgeous wine and yummy food and where we found this was Banca Cafe off Wanneroo Road in Tuart Hill.

I've been to Banca a couple of times and from memory it was pretty damn good and after choosing our last girlie venue (see below) I was hoping it would still be that way - and it was!!!

Owner Joe Fiorda runs the smooth operating restaurant and unlike its namesake it's nothing like waiting in a bank queue (Banca was originally the Tuart Hill Commonwealth Bank). The staff are pleasant, attentive and definitely looked after us on this occasion.

I knew it was going to be a long afternoon when my cousin started with a bottle of the Giesen Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and we clinked our glasses to every toast imaginable.

On my hit-list were the starters which included Garlic bread, Marinated Olives and Fetta and a serve of Italian Sausageand for my main I went the Papardelle.

The starters went down a treat and mixing and matching these little treats are just the way I love to eat, a littlew bit of this and a little bit of that and you feel like you're not missing out on anything.

The main well, was sensational. I don't often eat pasta out as my mother-in-law does a pretty good job of it at home but after seeing two Italian ladies making it fresh in the kitchen I knew it would be worth a try. The colourful dish was filled with red peppers, fetta, olives and Italian sausage and was something I could imagine eating in a Tuscan Villa - just gorgeous.

You would probably think that I was full by this stage but no I wanted more and so for dessert I just had to have the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Loosening my belt this certainly pushed me over the edge but I enjoyed every tablespoon of it. Served with ice-cream and you betcha cream this was scrumptious!

All in all Banca Cafe is a great place to try and somewhere I will visit again soon.

Banca's Papardelle - oh so good!

Just A Little Taste of Home

Monday July 13 2009
I don't often go to Nandos as I can get the real deal at home but after a busy day at work and another Siren's Movie Night on the cards a quick bite there was just what the doctor ordered.

The thing I like about Nandos is that it reminds me of my family everytime I walk in the door. The folky music playing the background, the Portuguese pictures and Portuguese phrases all over the wall, just scream GOOD TIMES as I visualise Madeira, Portugal circa 95 and 98!!

Having not been to Nandos for a while I noticed the menu had grown to include two types of rice, Portuguese style salads, Espetada (meat on skewers - my favourite ) and the old faithful Pastéis de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tart).

These types of dishes are typically Portuguese and you can bet your bottom dollar you would be served at least one of these if you had lunch in Portuguese household - just ask my hubby he can definitely attest to this! My pick of the day however was Chicken Tenderloins dressed in Lemon and herb (hey I may be Portuguese but that Peri Peri is some HOT stuff) and a side of chips. I would normally also go the Pastéis de Nata for dessert but I'm spoilt for choice at home and have these on a weekly basis - jealous????

Although there is quite a large population of Portuguese people living in WA, there is not a lot of choice when it comes to their cuisine. What Nandos has done is introduced the cuisine into the mainstream market targeting those unaware of the taste sensations Portuguese food can unleash - ande I'm all for that!!!

Chicken Tenderloins just the way I like it - Portuguese do, do it BETTER!

A Nice Surpise

Tuesday June 2 2009
Coming home from work on a Tuesday evening and being surprised with dinner with family is just what one wants to hear when she has no idea what to cook. And living in the northern suburbs there is an array to chose from - this time Asian Cuisine at The Tamarind in Mt Hawthorn.

I love this little place on Scarborough Beach Road, it's quaint, affordable and there is plenty on the menu to chose from. This visit we went for a banquet style meal and had a little bit of everything just to make sure we didn't miss out.

Knock-out favourites were the Pad Thai and Teriyaki chicken although one can't go past the vegetarian spring rolls and chicken legs (to die for chicken drumsticks without the bone and stuffed with beautiful herbs).

The Tamarind is a trusty old favourite which never disappoints. Your guaranteed good food, good service at affordable prices - it's even better when someone else is paying as was the case with us!!!

Teriyaki Chicken so yummy!!

The Best in WA

Monday May 25 2009
THERE were no signs of the economic crisis as WA's restaurant and catering fraternity came out in droves at this years WA Restaurant Catering and Industry Awards for Excellence held at the Burswood Grand Ballroom on May 25.

More than 900 members of the hospitality industry's glitterati turned out to hear "Gourmet Godfather" and Chair of Judges John Maiorana declare the awards the best he'd seen in its 15 year history, adding it was the new crop of chefs who were now leading the way in WA.

This year's big winners included Restaurant Amuse in East Perth who took out the biggest gong of the night winning Restaurant of the Year Award, while owner and chef, Hadleigh Troy took out the honour of Chef of Year. Not the first time to win an award Restaurant Amuse, were also winners of last year's New Restaurant Award and are known for their strong reputation of serving modern French Cuisine in the form of two degustation menus. Chef Hadleigh Troy, not an industry unknown, has worked overseas and was formerly at The Loose Box and Jackson's Restaurant.

Other star performers on the night included Nahm Thai who took out the award for Informal Restaurant of the Year and Best Thai Restaurant. The Judges Commendation Award went to Star Anise and Christina's in East Victoria Park won the Most Popular Restaurant Award while the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre was awarded the Caterer of the Year.

The 23 Restaurant Awards for Excellence were judged by a 53-member panel who visited the 97 finalists over a two-month period. Winners of the WA awards in eligible categories can contest the national awards to be held in Canberra in October.

See page 52 in the latest issue of Menu Magazine for detailed information on the award winners.

An Old Favourite

Friday May 8 2009
On a balmy Autumn evening there is nothing nicer than visiting my favourite local haunt, Piazza Del Sol otherwise known to regulars as LuCafe. Being a Friday night and not wanting to cook after a hard week slogging it out at the office hubby and I decided to hit Lu's with avengence. I of course ordered my usual the Tortellini Alla Panna while hubby stuck to his favourite the Capriciosa Pizza. The Tortellini Alla Panna as always was just delightful! Freshly made pasta that's not too creamy, drizzled with almonds and topped with Parmesan - oh so good!!!

This trusty little eatery hidden in the backstreets of Tuart Hill is just the place to go when you want to avoid the city crowds and get good value for money. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves to eat good, Italian, rustic fare at affordable prices!!

My all-time Piazza Del Sol fave the Tortellini Alla Panna

The Long Wait

Monday April 27 2009
Going out on a long weekend has its advantages and disadvantages. You want to chill out, enjoy good company and soak up the day in all its glory, after all that's what long weekends are all about - not this one though. After months of planning my cousins and decided on a girlie catch-up at The Windsor for the ANZAC Day long weekend.

Having eaten at The Windsor several times (and loving it) I suggested we go there instead of going where we always go - not one of my finest moments I must admit! Our booking was for 1pm and when we arrived the place was pumping and packed to the brim. It was a beautiful day and being seated next to the waterfall was just lovely. Our waitress took our drink orders and then told us we should really put in our food order also as there could be a wait, so taking her advice we placed our orders and waited.

An hour later and no meals to be seen we asked the waitress what the hold up was and she told us there was a wait on the food because of the long weekend crowd - they hadn't expected such a turnout. She then told us it would be at least another half hour before we got our meals.

Much to my tables horror I proceeded to talk about the weather and hope the sound of everyone's stomach rumbling would fade into the distance. When our food finally arrived we went for it and whether it was my hunger pains talking or the few too many wines I consumed -the Fish and Chips were the best I'd had in a long time and well worth the wait..

Will I go there again? All in all The Windsor has never disappointed, I'd just suggest going on a normal weekend as opposed to a very long one!!
